Ceiling Painting Services

Smooth Ceiling Painting

A smooth ceiling painted well looks seamless. A smooth ceiling painted poorly shows every roller mark and lap line, particularly under raking light from a window.

Quality ceiling white with the correct viscosity for roller application is used. Cutting-in at the cornice line is done by hand.

Ceilings in Sale and Timperley 1930s semis are typically at standard height and straightforward. The result is a clean, flat finish that reads as well-maintained throughout the room.

As interior painters covering the full room, we also handle walls and woodwork in a single visit where needed.

Artex and Textured Ceilings

Many 1960s and 1970s properties in Hale Barns and across the wider Timperley and Sale area have textured Artex ceilings. Some clients want to maintain the texture. Others want it flattened out.

Painting over Artex correctly requires the right roller pile to get into the texture without leaving dry patches or build-up. We advise on whether the texture is a candidate for overskimming before painting, or whether a high-quality textured ceiling paint is the better route.

We do not advise sanding Artex without a material test first, given the asbestos risk in ceilings installed before 1985.

Cornicing, Coving, and Ceiling Roses

Period properties in Bowdon, Hale, Didsbury, and Chorlton are where ceiling detail matters most. Cornicing on streets like Bow Green Road, Langham Road, and Palatine Road carries decorative plaster mouldings that need hand-cutting at the junction with both wall and ceiling.

Ceiling roses require individual attention at every curve and relief. We do not use roller technique close to moulded surfaces.

Where original cornicing has been clogged with successive paint layers, we discuss restoration options at the site visit.

Water Damage and Staining

A brown water stain on a ceiling shows through standard emulsion within weeks. The stain needs to be sealed before any finish coat is applied.

Stain-blocking primer is used on any area of water damage before painting. The ceiling is checked for active damp and advice given accordingly.

Where the water source has been addressed, we make sure the stain is fully blocked before finishing.

High Ceilings

Bowdon and Hale period properties regularly have ceiling heights of 10 feet or more. Reaching these ceilings safely and getting a consistent finish requires proper access equipment.

Tower scaffolding or safe access platforms are used on high ceilings. This is included in the quote.

Ladder-only working on high period ceilings produces inconsistent results and creates a safety risk.

Here’s How It Works

1. Assessment

Your decorator checks the ceiling surface, notes any staining, tests for loose plaster, and identifies any Artex or textured areas. The approach is confirmed before starting.

2. Preparation

Cracks are filled and sanded. Water stains get a stain-blocking coat. Loose plaster is stabilised. Cornicing and roses are assessed for paint build-up.

3. Priming

New or repaired plaster gets a sealing coat. Bare areas are primed before the finish coat. Water-damaged areas are blocked at this stage.

4. Cutting-in

All ceiling edges are hand-cut at the cornice, coving, or wall junction. On period properties with detailed mouldings, this stage takes considerably longer than a plain ceiling.

5. Finish Coat Application

Ceiling paint is applied by roller on flat areas, by brush on all moulded and angled sections. Coverage is inspected in good light before leaving.

Ceiling Painting Costs in Altrincham

Prices below are estimates only. Every ceiling is different. Call 0161 570 0342 for a precise quote.

Ceiling Height

High ceilings in Bowdon and Hale period properties require access equipment and more working time. Standard 1930s semi heights in Sale and Timperley are quicker to work on.

Surface Condition

Water staining, cracks, or Artex in poor condition all add preparation time. Stain blocking on a badly water-damaged ceiling takes longer than priming a clean surface.

Detail Level

A plain plastered ceiling costs less than a ceiling with original cornicing, a ceiling rose, and decorative mouldings at every junction.

Altrincham Decorators also handle adjacent surfaces. If your ceiling work connects to plasterboard painting or hallway painting, we can combine these into a single visit.
