Wood Painting Services in Altrincham

We cover the full range of timber — interior hardwood, exterior softwood, garden structures, and period joinery across Altrincham and Trafford.

Interior Hardwood

Bowdon and Hale properties often have original hardwood skirtings, architraves, handrails, and balustrades worth preserving. These respond well to a careful strip and recoat rather than being overloaded with more paint.

Timber is assessed before quoting. Some interior hardwood suits a clear oil or stain better than paint — honest advice is given on the best approach for the species and condition.

Exterior Timber

Exterior timber across Sale, Timperley, and Altrincham takes a harder beating than interior wood. Sun, frost, and rain work on it all year — unprotected timber softens and rots within a few seasons.

Breathable exterior oils and stains are used on garden timber and structural beams. For window frames and fascias, see our window frame painting page.

Staining and Varnishing

Staining brings out the natural grain while adding colour. Varnishing seals the surface with a durable, washable finish.

The right product depends on the timber, its location, and the level of traffic or weather exposure it faces. We carry a wide range of stain colours and can match to existing joinery.

Stripping and Restoration

Layers of old gloss on period joinery are common in Victorian and Edwardian properties. Multiple coats obscure the original moulding profile and make doors, skirtings, and architraves look heavy and clogged.

Stripping back to bare wood and starting again produces a noticeably cleaner result. Chemical strippers and heat guns are used depending on the profile and timber type.

Bespoke Joinery

Fitted shelving, alcove bookcases, and built-in units are increasingly common in Victorian terraces. New joinery needs priming and painting before it reads as part of the room.

As Altrincham Decorators, we handle outdoor joinery alongside interior work. For fencing and decking, see our fence painting and deck painting pages.

How Our Wood Painting Works

1. Site Visit

Your decorator inspects the timber, identifies species where relevant, checks condition, assesses existing finish, and gives honest advice on whether paint, stain, oil, or varnish is the right product.

2. Preparation

Loose or flaking finish is removed. Timber is sanded to the appropriate grit. MDF edges are sealed, and knots in pine are treated with knotting solution.

3. Priming

The correct primer for the timber and product system is applied. Bare hardwood, softwood, and MDF each need a different primer — skipping this is the most common cause of early failure.

4. Paint or Finish

Two coats of the chosen finish are applied in the correct order. Interior woodwork is typically satinwood or eggshell. Exterior timber gets an oil or microporous paint rated for outdoor exposure.

5. Final Inspection

We check coverage in good light and touch up any thin areas. Hardware and glass are cleaned of any overspray before we leave.

Single Room Interior Woodwork

Skirting, architraves, and window board in a single room typically costs £200 to £450. Larger or more complex timber projects are priced on a site visit.

Staircase Handrail and Balustrade

A staircase handrail and balustrade typically costs £300 to £600. A full Victorian terrace staircase restoration takes significantly longer and is quoted on inspection.

What Drives the Price

Three factors determine the cost: scope of timber, existing condition, and product choice. Timber with multiple layers of old paint or degraded varnish needs more preparation before a topcoat can go on.

Oil-based satinwood, water-based eggshell, and specialist exterior stains each have different application times. Full Victorian terrace interior woodwork across all rooms typically costs £1,200 to £2,400.
