Deck Painting Services
Decking Boards
Decking boards take the hardest punishment of any outdoor timber. Foot traffic, sun exposure, frost, and standing water cause boards to split, grey off, and become slippery within a few seasons.
Each board run is cleaned, sanded, and treated. Boards are assessed individually for splits or raised grain before treatment begins. Products are applied along the grain to ensure consistent penetration and finish.
Balustrades and Posts
Balustrade posts and rails are often the first part of a deck to look neglected. End grain at the top is prone to cracking, and vertical surfaces tend to flake before horizontal boards do.
Posts and rails are treated as part of every deck job. End grain is sealed before any topcoat goes on. Balustrades at Bowdon and Hale properties often use decorative turned timber, brushed by hand.
Steps and Handrails
Bare or mossy steps are a slip hazard. Handrails that have lost their coating become rough and unpleasant to grip.
Steps are treated with anti-slip finishes as standard where steps are part of the job. Handrails are stripped back to sound timber where coating has failed and given two full treatment coats.

Deck Staining and Finishing Options

Deck Staining vs Paint
The right product depends on the timber and how the deck is used. Penetrating oils and stains suit hardwoods and pressure-treated pine where you want a natural finish.
Film-forming deck paints suit older or rougher timber where appearance matters more than showing the grain. Advice is given at the site visit based on your timber species, age, and condition.
Anti-Slip Finishes
Anti-slip additives mixed into deck coatings give a gritty surface that reduces slipping in wet conditions. These are relevant for north-facing decks, shaded decks under trees, and decks used by children or older family members.
Anti-slip treatment is included in the standard recommendation for steps. For full deck areas, we discuss it as an option based on your deck’s position and use.

How Deck Painting Works
1. Site Visit
Your decorator assesses the decking timber, existing coating, and condition of posts, rails, and steps. Any boards that need replacing before treatment are noted.
2. Cleaning
Decking is cleaned with a pressure washer or dedicated deck cleaner to remove algae, dirt, and grey oxidation. Old coatings are stripped where they prevent proper adhesion.
3. Sanding
Boards are sanded along the grain to open up the timber and remove loose coating. Raised grain and splinter risks are addressed at this stage.
4. Treatment
Product applied along the grain to manufacturer coverage rate. End grain sections and step nosings get additional attention. Anti-slip additive mixed in where required.
5. Second Coat
Applied after the drying time specified by the manufacturer. Two coats are standard on bare or heavily weathered timber.
6. Final Inspection
We check the full deck including all balustrade components, steps, and handrails. Boards are walked before we leave to confirm no thin sections.

Deck Painting Costs in Altrincham
Prices are estimates only. Call 0161 570 0342 for a precise quote. A standard residential deck up to 20 square metres typically costs £300 to £600, including balustrades and steps where present.

Timber Condition
Sound timber with a recent coat needs light prep and two treatment coats. Heavily weathered or previously coated decking needs considerably more preparation time.
Deck Complexity
A flat open platform is faster than a multi-level deck with multiple rail sections, steps, and built-in seating.
Product Choice
Premium deck oils and paint systems cost more per litre but typically offer longer intervals between retreatment.
Typical Ranges
- Small deck, up to 12 sq metres, sound timber: £250 to £400
- Mid-size deck with balustrades and steps, 20 sq metres: £450 to £700
- Larger multi-level deck with extensive balustrades: £700 to £1,100
